The cock fighting issue.

From the Republican Women of St. Charles Parish:

The following is a letter that the RWSC sent to the local papers regarding the Cock Fighting issue in Louisiana.

We want you to be aware of this issue and to show your support. Please call Represtive Gary Smith's office to ask that he supports Lentini's bill, which would end cockfighting now. Others are trying to pass bills that would phase it out, which we do not want to happen.

State Rep. Gary Smith: 985-764-9122 or

State Rep. Ernest Wooton: 504-393-5649 or larep105@legis.state.la.us

Dear Editor:

The members of the Republican Women of St. Charles Parish commend Senator Lentini for sponsoring Senate Bill No. 39 which would ban cockfighting in Louisiana. Louisiana is now the only state in the Union to allow this cruel practice. Continuing to allow the mindless abuse and the suffering for "sport" will send a very negative message to our fellow Americans, particularly the national elected officials who will be watching with interest.

During this period of recovery from Katrina, when fellow Americans truly want to help but question why we would allow such a practice to continue, we ask that our legislators in both the Senate and the House join in sponsorship and offer to lend their names alongside Senator Lentini's to send the message that Louisiana is ready to move on and will say no to those who neglect to act in the State's best interest. Cockfighting is corrosive and should be abolished immediately. As was well stated in the Times Picayune's editorial section on April 19, 2007, "You don't phase out cruelty. You end it. And not at some point in the future. But now."

We ask that all concerned with this issue contact their respective legislators and ask them to assist Senator Lentini in immediately banning cockfighting in Louisiana.

Yours truly,

Leslie Cooper, President
